Le nom est porté dans la Haute-Vienne et la Dordogne. Variante rare : Lamargo. Forme voisine : Lamargue. Sans doute aucun rapport avec le prénom Marguerite. Margot est en effet un toponyme assez fréquent, nom entre autres d'un hameau à Arnac-la-Poste (87). Pour le sens, on hésitera entre l'ancien occitan "marga" (= marécage) et un autre mot occitan "marga" ayant le sens de frontière, limite.
